A Complete Guide to Traveling in Puerto Vallarta

Everything you need to know before you go: flights, ground transport, neighborhoods, weather and the small details that make a Puerto Vallarta trip seamless.

Puerto Vallarta has quietly become one of the most well-rounded vacation destinations in Mexico — direct flights from dozens of US and Canadian cities, world-class restaurants, and a coastline that rivals anywhere in the Pacific. Here's how to make the most of your first (or fifth) visit.

Getting there

Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) is served by major carriers including American, United, Delta, Alaska, Air Canada and WestJet, plus Aeroméxico and Volaris. Most flights from the western US arrive in under four hours. Customs is quick — usually under 20 minutes — and Casa Las Amapas is a 15-minute drive from the terminal.

Airport transfers and getting around

Skip the airport taxi sharks at arrivals. Pre-book a private transfer through our concierge or use Uber from the upper level of the airport. Once in town, Uber and InDriver work well, taxis are inexpensive but should be agreed on before riding, and most of Zona Romántica is walkable. You don't need a rental car unless you plan to explore Sayulita or San Sebastián.

When to visit

High season runs from mid-November through April: clear skies, warm days in the high 70s to mid 80s °F, and cool nights perfect for the villa's open-air terraces. Whale season peaks December through March. The shoulder months of May and October offer lower rates and only occasional showers. Summer is lush and warm, with afternoon storms that clear by sunset.

Which neighborhood suits you

  • Amapas — the hillside above Los Muertos, quiet, residential, sweeping bay views (where Casa Las Amapas sits)
  • Zona Romántica — walkable, restaurant-packed, lively after dark
  • Conchas Chinas — Beverly Hills of PV, dramatic ocean views
  • Marina Vallarta — calm, family-oriented, near the airport
  • Sayulita and San Pancho — surf towns 45–60 minutes north

Money, language and tipping

Mexican pesos are preferred but US dollars are widely accepted. ATMs at major banks (BBVA, Banorte, Santander) give the best rates. English is spoken everywhere in the tourist zones. Tip 15–20% at restaurants, 50–100 pesos for porters and drivers, and 100–200 pesos per day for housekeeping if applicable.

Safety

Puerto Vallarta is one of the safest cities in Mexico for visitors. Use the same common sense you would anywhere: keep valuables in the villa safe, take licensed transportation at night, and stay hydrated under the Pacific sun. Casa Las Amapas is gated, staffed and monitored 24/7.
